RULES OF THE ROAD

We are not big fans of rules and regulations. Yet, we appreciate the fact that all of us need a little discipline and direction to ensure that we are drinking from the same barrel…so to speak.  With that said, the following are a few guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe and successful trip on the Bourbon Chase.

How it works
The best way to envision the process is like this.  Teams of 6 to 12 are divided into two vehicles that you provide.  (We recommend 12 or 15-passanger vans.)  The first runner climbs from their van to run  while the van-load of others drives ahead, drops off runner #2 and waits until runner #1 finishes.  When #1 finishes, he passes a wristband to #2 and then climbs into the van.  The van moves forward to the next exchange point where runner #3 gets out and awaits the finish of  #2.  This cycle continues until runner #6 hands off to runner #7 in van 2.  The same rotating process continues on van 2 until runner # 12 passes the wristband to runner #1 again in van 1. The process starts anew.

Race Numbers and Wrist Bands
Race numbers must be worn by all participants at all times.  Further, your Team Wrist Band must be worn at all times throughout the race by the active runner on the course.

Conduct on Race Course
We have an expectation and complete confidence that all participants will conduct themselves in a safe and sportsman –like manner.  We encourage you and your team members to have a great time; however, we cannot condone inappropriate behavior.  Have fun, but always act in a manner in which you can be proud.

Exchange Zones
Please be sensitive to the other teams and individual runners on the course by never parking your van before an exchange point.  If a parking lot is not provided, please park off the road well beyond the runner exchange zone.  Look, look, and look again before you re-enter the road.  We are counting on you to serve as a guardian angel not only for your teammates, but for the entire family of runners on the course.

Vehicles Following Participants
We understand your desire to follow behind runners on your team, especially to light the way for them during night-time relay legs; however, as well intended as this is, we cannot allow it.  Not only does this “shadowing” create traffic problems, but it also presents safety concerns for all athletes.  Therefore, please move quickly forward to the next exchange area and feel confident that everyone on the course, from officials to competitor teams, are committed to the safety and protection of all.

Race Official Instructions
We appreciate your respect for and attention to all instructions given by Course Officials.  They have authority to disqualify a team for violations, abusive behavior, or team failure to follow instructions given by volunteers. Please understand that their judgment and decisions are considered final.

Drinking and Driving
It is illegal in your state and it is illegal here.  We know it is called the Bourbon Chase, but ANY consumption of alcohol during the course of this event will not be tolerated.  There will be plenty of time for fun when the running is done.  Your safety and the safety of all the participants is our #1 priority.

Travel on the Left
Runners are required to run along the left shoulder of the roadway at all times, unless officially instructed to do otherwise.  In addition, runners must wear a reflective vest and a headlamp between the hours of 7pm – 7am.

Rotation of Runners
Your relay team is expected to rotate your team members in the same sequence throughout the race. Thus, if a runner starts in the # 1 position, he/she must stay in that rotation by running legs #13 and #25.   If, due to injury, a runner is forced to quit in the midst of his/her leg, the next runner in the rotation must finish only the injured runner’s leg before handing off to the next runner in the rotation.

Display of Team Vehicle Signs
Every team is restricted to only two vehicles on the course.  Two official vehicle signs will be issued to each team vehicle.  These signs need to be displayed on your vehicles in order to have access to exchange zone and other restricted areas.

Penalties for Infractions
We are confident that your team and others will honor and respect the guidelines and protocol in place for the successful implementation of the relay.  In the unlikely event that individuals or teams disregard these guidelines or the specific instructions of race officials, time penalties will be assessed on the team, or in extreme cases, a team will be disqualified or ejected from the relay competition.
